[ shit, she's been more rebellious than that in the face of authority, but then again, she hasn't really thought to confront anyone here. she's just been finding excuses to enjoy herself when and where she can, and if she butts up against trouble then that's future!harley's problem to deal with.

You sure askin' is all you did? [ because this feels like kind of an... extreme punishment for posing questions. ]
[ harley crosses her arms over her chest, but then — oh, there's a loose string hanging from the end of her cutoffs, so she's a little distracted unfolding herself and then plucking at that for a minute, glancing up when she realizes there's been a lull in the conversation. oops. ]
So what, you thought if at first you don't succeed... blah blah blah? I mean, not to armchair diagnose or anythin', but you know what they say about doin' the same thing and expectin' different results.
[ not that she doesn't respect the persistence here, but. ]
You might be right, but you think they're ever gonna admit it? LIEs, it's all right there in the name and everything.
I don't know about that. Any system's got its loopholes. And some people know how to exploit 'em for their own benefits. And some of those people are part of the very system themselves.
[ can you tell harley doesn't have a very high opinion of the legal system, period? it's hard to when you hail from a city with not only crooked cops but crooked lawyers and most people are either out for themselves or being paid to sway things a certain way for the ones with more power.
so she doesn't put a lot of faith in systems being able to get anything done. ]
Sure, there probably is, but if they're bein' cagey with answers at the top, that's gonna trickle all the way down. And eventually, anybody askin' too many questions is gonna be dealt with. Not sayin' it's right, but it explains a lot.
You do realise that only makes it so something has to change?
( whilst harley might not have a good opinion of the legal system suzanne believed in it, or at least in a fair one doing the right thing, which means this one needed changing )
What I was asking them wasn't even matters of legality.
[ she's challenging on purpose, being difficult. but mostly because, in her experience, asking the tougher questions is sometimes what gets people to push back. gives her the chance to see what's beneath when they're not purposefully trying to remain level. ]
If you still wanna take on the whole system after this, you're gonna need a whole lot more than good intentions, or thinkin' you can trick them into givin' you a loophole to take them down. Whoever they are, they've been around a while, so it won't be a cakewalk.
